Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr narrated to us, saying: al-Layth narrated to me, from ʿUqayl, from Ibn Shihāb, who said: Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me that he was ten years old when the Messenger of Allah arrived in Medina. My mothers used to make me regularly serve the Prophet, and I served him for ten years. The Prophet died when I was twenty, and I knew more than anyone about the matter of the veil when it was revealed. The first time it was revealed was when the Messenger of Allah consummated his marriage to Zaynab bint Jaḥsh. The Prophet awoke as a newlywed and invited the people, who ate. Then they left, but a group remained with the Prophet and stayed a long time. The Prophet stood and went out, and I went with him so that they would leave. The Prophet walked and I walked with him until he reached the threshold of ʿĀʾishah’s chamber. Then he thought they had gone, so he returned, and I returned with him. When he entered Zaynab’s chamber, they were still sitting and had not stood up. The Prophet went back out, and I went out with him, until he reached the threshold of ʿĀʾishah’s chamber. He thought they had left, so he returned, and I returned with him. They had then gone. The Prophet drew a curtain between me and him, and the veil was revealed.
