Ismāʿīl said: Mālik narrated to me, from Nāfiʿ, from al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad, from ʿĀʾishah, the Prophet’s wife, who informed him: I bought a cushion with images on it. When the Messenger of Allah saw it, he stood at the doorway and did not enter. I recognized disapproval in his face and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I repent to Allah and to His Messenger. What have I done wrong?’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘What is this cushion?’ I said, ‘I bought it for you to sit on and recline against.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘Those who make these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and they will be told, “Give life to what you have created.”’ He also said, ‘The angels do not enter a house in which there are images.’
