Ibn ʿAbbās reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade drinking directly from waterskins. After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had forbidden it, a man got up during the night to drink from a waterskin and drank directly from it; a snake came out of it toward him.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The report places the man’s action after the prohibition, then states that a snake came out of the waterskin toward him. It does not explicitly say that the action caused the snake to emerge.

The report narrates the man’s direct drinking from the waterskin and the snake emerging from it, without explicitly stating a causal relation between them.

Is the snake’s emergence presented as a consequence of drinking directly from the waterskin, or simply as what happened next?
