Sunan Ibn Majah 3013

Ayyūb ibn Muḥammad al-Hāshimī narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Qāhir ibn al-Sarī al-Sulamī narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kinānah ibn ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās al-Sulamī narrated to us, that his father informed him, from his father, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for forgiveness for his community on the evening of ʿArafah, and the response came: “I have forgiven them, except the wrongdoer; I will take the right of the wronged from him.” He said, “My Lord, if You will, grant the wronged person a share from Paradise and forgive the wrongdoer.” His request was not answered that evening. When morning came at Muzdalifah, he repeated the supplication, and his request was granted. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed—or smiled. Abū Bakr and ʿUmar said to him, “May our fathers and mothers be your ransom! This is not usually a time when you laugh; what has made you laugh, may God gladden you?” He said, “When the enemy of God, Iblīs, learned that God, Mighty and Majestic, had answered my supplication and forgiven my community, he took up dust and began throwing it on his head, crying out in woe and destruction. What I saw of his distress made me laugh.”
