Translation

Muḥammad ibn Bashshār and Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd narrated to us; they said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Aṣbahānī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maʿqil, who said: I sat with Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah in the mosque and asked him about this verse: «A compensation by fasting, charity, or sacrifice.» Kaʿb said: It was revealed concerning me. I had an affliction on my head, and I was carried to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), with lice falling across my face. He said, “I did not think your hardship had reached the extent I now see. Can you find a sheep?” I said, “No.” Then this verse was revealed: «A compensation by fasting, charity, or sacrifice.» He said: The fasting is three days; the charity is feeding six needy people, half a ṣāʿ of food for each person; and the sacrifice is a sheep.
