حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَهِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ، أَنْبَأَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، جَمِيعًا عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا صَعْبُ بْنُ جَثَّامَةَ، قَالَ مَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ وَأَنَا بِالأَبْوَاءِ أَوْ بِوَدَّانَ فَأَهْدَيْتُ لَهُ حِمَارَ وَحْشٍ فَرَدَّهُ عَلَىَّ فَلَمَّا رَأَى فِي وَجْهِيَ الْكَرَاهِيَةَ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِنَا رَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ وَلَكِنَّا حُرُمٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Translation

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us; they said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us. [A second chain:] Muḥammad ibn Rumḥ informed us: al-Layth ibn Saʿd informed us. Both transmitted from Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: Ṣaʿb ibn Jaththāmah informed us: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me at al-Abwāʾ or Waddān. I offered him a wild donkey, but he returned it to me. When he saw my displeasure, he said, “We returned it only because we are in the consecrated state, not because we reject your gift.”
