Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Shabābah narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū al-Tayyāḥ, who said: I heard Muṭarrif relate from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mughaffal that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that dogs be killed. Then he said: What is the matter with them and dogs? Then he granted them permission to keep a hunting dog.

Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us: ʿUthmān ibn ʿUmar narrated to us. [Another chain:] Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us. Both said: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū al-Tayyāḥ, who said: I heard Muṭarrif relate from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mughaffal that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that dogs be killed. Suwayd ibn Saʿīd informed us: Mālik ibn Anas informed us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that dogs be killed.

Abū Ṭāhir narrated to us: Ibn Wahb narrated to us: Yūnus informed me, from Ibn Shihāb, from Sālim, from his father, who said: I heard the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) raising his voice as he commanded that dogs be killed. Dogs were being killed except for hunting dogs and livestock dogs.

Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us: al-Awzāʿī narrated to us: Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr told me, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever keeps a dog loses one qīrāṭ from his deeds every day, except for a dog used for crops or livestock.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, from Abū Shihāb: Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd told me, from al-Ḥasan, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mughaffal, who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Were dogs not a community among the communities, I would have ordered that they be killed. So kill the jet-black ones among them. Any people who keep a dog—other than a livestock dog, hunting dog, or crop dog—have two qīrāṭs deducted from their rewards every day.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Khālid ibn Makhlad narrated to us: Mālik ibn Anas narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn Khuṣayfah, from al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd, from Sufyān ibn Abī Zuhayr, who said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever keeps a dog that is of no use for crops or livestock loses one qīrāṭ from his deeds every day. He was asked: Did you hear that from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: Yes, by the Lord of this mosque.

Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us: al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Makhlad narrated to us: Ḥaywah ibn Shurayḥ narrated to us: Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd told me: Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī informed me, from Abū Thaʿlabah al-Khushanī, who said: I came to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Messenger of God, we live in a land of the People of the Book and eat from their vessels. We also live in a land for hunting: I hunt with my bow, with my trained dog, and with my untrained dog. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: As for what you mentioned about living among the People of the Book, do not eat from their vessels unless you have no alternative. If you have no alternative, wash them and eat from them. As for hunting, mention the name of God over what you shoot with your bow and eat it. Mention the name of God over what you catch with your trained dog and eat it. If you catch game with your untrained dog and reach it while it is still alive, slaughter it and eat it.

ʿAlī ibn al-Mundhir narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl narrated to us: Bayān ibn Bishr narrated to us, from al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, who said: I asked the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him): We are a people who hunt with these dogs. He said: When you send your trained dogs and mention the name of God over them, eat what they catch for you, even if they kill it, unless the dog eats from it. If the dog eats from it, do not eat, for I fear it only caught it for itself. If other dogs join them, do not eat it. Ibn Mājah said: I heard him—that is, ʿAlī ibn al-Mundhir—say: I performed the pilgrimage fifty-eight times, most of them on foot.

ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Sharīk, from Ḥajjāj ibn Arṭāh, from al-Qāsim ibn Abī Bazzah, from Sulaymān al-Yashkurī, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: We were prohibited from eating the game caught by their dogs and birds—that is, the Magians.

ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah, from Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ṣāmit, from Abū Dharr, who said: I asked the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) about a completely black dog, and he said: A devil.

Abū ʿUmayr ʿĪsā ibn Muḥammad al-Naḥḥās and ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus al-Ramlī narrated to us; they said: Ḍamrah ibn Rabīʿah narrated to us, from al-Awzāʿī, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Abū Thaʿlabah al-Khushanī, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Eat what your arrow brings back to you.

ʿAlī ibn al-Mundhir narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl narrated to us: Mujālid ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from ʿĀmir, from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, who said: I said, Messenger of God, we hunt with arrows. He said: When you shoot and pierce the game, eat what you have pierced.

Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us: Maʿmar informed us, from ʿĀṣim, from al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, who said: I said, Messenger of God, I shoot game and it disappears from me overnight. He said: If you find your arrow in it and find nothing else in it, then eat it.

Both said: Zakariyyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah narrated to us, from ʿĀmir, from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, who said: I asked the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) about hunting with a miʿrāḍ. He said: Whatever it strikes with its sharp edge, eat; whatever it strikes with its broad side is a fatal blow.

ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from his father, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from Hammām ibn al-Ḥārith al-Nakhaʿī, from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, who said: I asked the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) about the miʿrāḍ. He said: Do not eat it unless it pierces through.

Yaʿqūb ibn Ḥumayd ibn Kāṣib narrated to us: Maʿn ibn ʿĪsā narrated to us, from Hishām ibn Saʿd, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whatever is cut from a livestock animal while it is alive, that cut portion is carrion.

Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us: Abū Bakr al-Hudhalī narrated to us, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from Tamīm al-Dārī, who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: At the end of time, people will cut off the humps of camels and the tails of sheep. Be warned: whatever is cut from a living animal is carrion.

Abū Muṣʿab narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Zayd ibn Aslam narrated to us, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Two kinds of carrion have been made lawful for us: fish and locusts.

Abū Bishr Bakr ibn Khalaf and Naṣr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; they said: Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā ibn ʿUmārah narrated to us: Abū al-ʿAwwām narrated to us, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Salmān, who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about locusts and said: They are among the largest armies of God; I do not eat them, nor do I declare them forbidden.
