ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us: Ibn Abī Fudayk narrated to us: al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn ʿUthmān told me, from ʿUmārah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣayyād, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, who said: I asked Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī how sacrificial offerings were made in the time of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: In the time of the Prophet, a man would offer one sheep as a sacrifice on behalf of himself and his household; they would eat from it and feed others. Then people began vying with one another, and things became as you see now.
