Chapters on Slaughtering

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us; they said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Yazīd, from his father, from Sibāʿ ibn Thābit, from Umm Kurz, who said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: For a boy, two equivalent sheep; for a girl, one sheep.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: ʿAffān narrated to us: Ḥammād ibn Salamah informed us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym narrated to us, from Yūsuf ibn Māhak, from Ḥafṣah bint ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us to offer two sheep as the ʿaqīqah for a boy and one sheep for a girl.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us: Hishām ibn Ḥassān narrated to us, from Ḥafṣah bint Sīrīn, from Salmān ibn ʿĀmir, who heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: A boy has an ʿaqīqah, so shed blood on his behalf and remove the harm from him.

Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us: Shuʿayb ibn Isḥāq narrated to us: Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah narrated to us, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Samurah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: Every boy is held in pledge for his ʿaqīqah; it is slaughtered on his behalf on the seventh day, his head is shaved, and he is given a name.

Yaʿqūb ibn Ḥumayd ibn Kāṣib narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated to us: ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith told me, from Ayyūb ibn Mūsā, who said that Yazīd ibn ʿAbd al-Muzanī narrated to him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: An ʿaqīqah is offered for a boy, and his head is not touched with blood.

Abū Bishr Bakr ibn Khalaf narrated to us: Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ narrated to us, from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, from Abū al-Malīḥ, from Nubayshah, who said: A man called out to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Messenger of God, in the pre-Islamic era we used to offer a ʿatīrah in Rajab. What do you command us to do? He said: Slaughter for God, Mighty and Sublime, in whatever month it may be, honor God, and feed others. They said: Messenger of God, in the pre-Islamic era we used to offer a farʿ. What do you command us to do? He said: For every grazing herd there is a farʿ: you nourish it with your livestock until it can carry a load, then slaughter it and give its meat in charity—I think he said—to the traveler. That is better.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us; they said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: There is no farʿ and no ʿatīrah. Hishām included in his narration: The farʿ is the first offspring, and the ʿatīrah is the sheep slaughtered by a household in Rajab.

Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿUmar al-ʿAdanī narrated to us: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no farʿ and no ʿatīrah. Ibn Mājah said: This is a unique report transmitted by al-ʿAdanī.

Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to us: Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ narrated to us, from Abū Qilābah, from Abū al-Ashʿath, from Shaddād ibn Aws, that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: God, Mighty and Sublime, has prescribed excellence in all things. When you kill, kill well; and when you slaughter, slaughter well. Let one of you sharpen his blade and spare the animal suffering.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: ʿUqbah ibn Khālid narrated to us, from Mūsā ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, who informed me from his father, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man dragging a sheep by its ear and said: Leave its ear and take hold of the front of its neck.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, nephew of Ḥusayn al-Juʿfī, narrated to us: Marwān ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us: Qurrat ibn Ḥaywāʾīl told me, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from his father ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that blades be sharpened and that this be concealed from the animals. He said: When one of you slaughters, let him finish quickly. [Another chain:] Jaʿfar ibn Musāfir narrated to us: Abū al-Aswad narrated to us: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Sālim, from his father, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with the same wording.

ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Isrāʾīl, from Simāk, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, regarding the verse “The devils inspire their allies”: They used to say, “Do not eat what has had the name of God mentioned over it, but eat what has not.” Then God, Mighty and Sublime, revealed: “Do not eat from that over which the name of God has not been mentioned.”

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, Mother of the Believers: Some people said, Messenger of God, some people bring us meat, and we do not know whether the name of God was mentioned over it. He said: Mention the name of God yourselves and eat. They had only recently left disbelief.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Abū al-Aḥwaṣ narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim, from al-Shaʿbī, from Muḥammad ibn Ṣayfī, who said: I slaughtered two rabbits at Marwah and brought them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He ordered me to eat them.

Abū Bishr Bakr ibn Khalaf narrated to us: Ghundar narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us: I heard Ḥāḍir ibn Muhājir relate from Sulaymān ibn Yasār, from Zayd ibn Thābit, that a wolf had bitten a sheep, so they slaughtered it with a flintstone. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) granted them permission to eat it.

Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us: Sufyān narrated to us, from Simāk ibn Ḥarb, from Murriyy ibn Qaṭarī, from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, who said: I said, Messenger of God, we hunt game and have no knife, only sharp stones and a shard of wood. He said: Let the blood flow by whatever means you wish, and mention the name of God over it.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us: ʿUmar ibn ʿUbayd al-Ṭanāfisī narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn Masrūq, from ʿAbāyah ibn Rifāʿah, from his grandfather Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj, who said: We were with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. I said: Messenger of God, we go on military expeditions without knives. He said: Whatever makes the blood flow and has the name of God mentioned over it, eat it, except a tooth or a fingernail, for a tooth is a bone and a fingernail is the knife of the Ethiopians.

Abū Kurayb narrated to us: Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated to us: Hilāl ibn Maymūn al-Juhanī narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yazīd al-Laythī—ʿAṭāʾ said, “I only know this from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī”—that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a boy skinning a sheep. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Step aside so I can show you. He put his hand between the hide and the flesh and pushed it in until it reached the armpit, then said: Young man, skin it like this. Then he went on, led the people in prayer, and did not perform ablution.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Khalaf ibn Khalīfah narrated to us. [Another chain:] ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us: Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah informed us. Both transmitted from Yazīd ibn Kaysān, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a man from the Anṣār. The man took a knife to slaughter for the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), who said to him: Do not slaughter a milk-producing animal.
