Sunan Ibn Majah 1523
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بِشْرٍ، بَكْرُ بْنُ خَلَفٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أُبَىٍّ جَاءَ ابْنُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَعْطِنِي قَمِيصَكَ أُكَفِّنْهُ فِيهِ . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ " آذِنُونِي بِهِ " . فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ مَا ذَاكَ لَكَ . فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ " أَنَا بَيْنَ خِيرَتَيْنِ {اسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لاَ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ } " . فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ سُبْحَانَهُ {وَلاَ تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا وَلاَ تَقُمْ عَلَى قَبْرِهِ} .

Abu Bishr Bakr ibn Khalaf narrated to us; Yahya ibn Sa‘id narrated to us, from Ubaydullah, from Nafi‘, from Ibn Umar, who said: ‘When Abdullah ibn Ubayy died, his son came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “Messenger of Allah, give me your shirt so I can shroud him in it.” The Messenger of Allah said, “Let me know about him.” When the Prophet intended to perform the funeral prayer over him, Umar ibn al-Khattab said to him, “That is not for you.” The Prophet performed the prayer over him, then said, “I have been given a choice between two things: ‘Ask forgiveness for them, or do not ask forgiveness for them.’” Then Allah, Glorified is He, revealed: “And never perform the prayer over any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave.”’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic preserves Umar’s brief objection as ‘that is not for you’ and the Prophet’s reply that he was given a choice; explanatory matter from the English witness is not added.
