Al-Walid ibn Amr ibn al-Sukayn narrated to us: Abu Hammam narrated to us: Musa ibn Ubaydah narrated to us: Musab ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Aishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) opened a door between himself and the people—or drew aside a curtain—and saw the people praying behind Abu Bakr. He praised Allah for the good state he saw them in, hoping that Allah would succeed him among them in light of what he had seen of them. He said: ‘O people, anyone—whether among the people generally or among the believers—who is struck by a calamity, let him console himself through my calamity in place of the calamity that befalls him from anyone else. No one from my community will be struck by a calamity after me more severe for him than my calamity.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic gives two alternatives for how the Prophet looked out: he opened a door or drew aside a curtain. The phrase ‘رَجَاءَ أَنْ يَخْلُفَهُ اللَّهُ فِيهِمْ بِالَّذِي رَآهُمْ’ is compressed and unclear; the translation keeps its close sense without specifying what succession or replacement means. ‘فَلْيَتَعَزَّ بِمُصِيبَتِهِ بِي’ means to take comfort in the calamity of the Prophet’s loss when facing another loss.

The wording about Allah succeeding the Prophet among them ‘بِالَّذِي رَآهُمْ’ is compressed, and the precise intended relation is unclear.

What does the phrase ‘أن يخلفه الله فيهم بالذي رآهم’ mean in this context? The translation preserves its close wording.
