Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: He said: Khalid ibn Makhlad narrated to us: Yazid ibn Abd al-Malik al-Nawfali narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Ruman, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘A miscarried child whom I send ahead of me is dearer to me than a mounted warrior whom I leave behind.’

‘سِقْطٌ’ refers to a miscarried fetus or child. The paired expressions ‘أُقَدِّمُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ’ and ‘أُخَلِّفُهُ خَلْفِي’ are retained as sending ahead and leaving behind; ‘فارس’ is a mounted warrior/horseman.
