Yahya ibn Hakim narrated to us; Yahya ibn Sa‘id and Ibn Abi Adi narrated to us, from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi, from Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Let none of you be prevented from his pre-dawn meal by Bilal’s call to prayer. He gives the call so that the sleeper among you may wake and the one of you who is up in prayer may return. Dawn is not when it appears like this; rather, it is like this, stretching across the horizon of the sky.’

  • The repeated ‘like this’ follows the source’s demonstrative wording; the gestures it may accompany are not described in the text.
