Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah informed us; Jarir informed us, from al-A‘mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘When it is the fasting day of one of you, let him not speak obscenely or act ignorantly. If someone behaves ignorantly toward him, let him say, “I am a person who is fasting.”’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic contrasts obscene speech with ignorant behavior; both expressions are retained.
