What was narrated concerning the testimony that one has seen the crescent Sunan Ibn Majah 1652
Arabic hadith text
حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الأَوْدِيُّ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا سِمَاكُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَقَالَ أَبْصَرْتُ الْهِلاَلَ اللَّيْلَةَ . فَقَالَ: " أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ " . قَالَ نَعَمْ . قَالَ: " قُمْ يَا بِلاَلُ فَأَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ أَنْ يَصُومُوا غَدًا " .
قَالَ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ : هَكَذَا رِوَايَةُ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَوْرٍ ، وَالْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ، وَرَوَاهُ حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، فَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ، وَقَالَ : فَنَادَى أَنْ يَقُومُوا ، وَأَنْ يَصُومُوا "
Translation
It wasnarrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said
“A Bedouin came to the Prophet(ﷺ) and said: ‘I have seen the new crescent tonight.’ He said:‘Doyou bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped butAllahand that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?’ He said:‘Yes.’ Hesaid: ‘Get up, O Bilal, and announce to the peoplethat they shouldfast tomorrow.’” Abu 'Ali said: "This is how itwas narrated from Walid bin AbuThawr and Hasan bin 'Ali. It wasalso narrated from Hammad binSalamah, but he did not mentionIbn 'Abbas. He said: 'And heannounced that they shouldperform the prayer and that theyshould fast.'"
