Ubayd Allah ibn Abd al-Karim narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Umayyah narrated to us; Isa ibn Musa al-Bukhari narrated to us, from Ubaydah al-Ammi, from Farqad al-Sabakhi, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about a person observing i‘tikaf: ‘He remains apart from sins, and good deeds are credited to him like one who performs all good deeds.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The wording about the person observing i‘tikaf and sins is unusual; ‘remains apart from sins’ follows its literal sense without adding an explanation.

The clause ‘huwa ya‘kufu al-dhunub’ is unusual and its intended relation between the person observing i‘tikaf and sins is not explicit.

Should this clause be rendered as remaining apart from sins, or is another sense intended?
