حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مُوسَى الْخَطْمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ نَذْرُ لَيْلَةٍ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَعْتَكِفُهَا فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ .

Ishaq ibn Musa al-Khatmi narrated to us; Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Nafi‘, from Ibn Umar, from Umar, that he had made a vow before Islam to observe i‘tikaf for one night. He asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he instructed him to observe i‘tikaf.
