حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ صَلَّى الصُّبْحَ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَكَانَ الَّذِي يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ فِيهِ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَأَمَرَ فَضُرِبَ لَهُ خِبَاءٌ فَأَمَرَتْ عَائِشَةُ بِخِبَاءٍ فَضُرِبَ لَهَا وَأَمَرَتْ حَفْصَةُ بِخِبَاءٍ فَضُرِبَ لَهَا فَلَمَّا رَأَتْ زَيْنَبُ خِبَاءَهُمَا أَمَرَتْ بِخِبَاءٍ فَضُرِبَ لَهَا فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ " آلْبِرَّ تُرِدْنَ " . فَلَمْ يَعْتَكِفْ فِي رَمَضَانَ وَاعْتَكَفَ عَشْرًا مِنْ شَوَّالٍ .

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Ya‘la ibn Ubayd narrated to us; Yahya ibn Sa‘id narrated to us, from Amrah, from Aishah, who said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to observe i‘tikaf, he would pray the dawn prayer and then enter the place where he intended to observe i‘tikaf. He intended to observe i‘tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan, so he ordered a tent to be set up for him. Aishah ordered a tent to be set up for her, and Hafsah ordered a tent to be set up for her. When Zaynab saw their two tents, she ordered a tent to be set up for her. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that, he said, ‘Is it righteousness that you seek?’ He did not observe i‘tikaf in Ramadan, and he observed i‘tikaf for ten days in Shawwal.
