Sunan Ibn Majah 1737
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ، أَنْبَأَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ ذُكِرَ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ: رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ " كَانَ يَوْمًا يَصُومُهُ أَهْلُ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ. فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَصُومَهُ فَلْيَصُمْهُ، وَمَنْ كَرِهَهُ فَلْيَدَعْهُ " .

Muhammad ibn Rumh narrated to us; al-Layth ibn Sa‘d informed us, from Nafi‘, from Abdullah ibn Umar, that Ashura was mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: ‘It was a day that the people of the Age of Ignorance used to fast. Whoever among you wishes to fast it, let him fast it; and whoever dislikes it, let him leave it.’
