Abu 'Ubayd Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd ibn Maymun al-Madani narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Salamah al-Harrani narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Taymi narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn Zayd, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had considered using a horn and ordered that a bell be fashioned. Then 'Abdullah ibn Zayd was shown in a dream: ‘I saw a man wearing two green garments and carrying a bell. I said to him, “O servant of Allah, will you sell the bell?” He said, “What would you do with it?” I said, “I would use it to call people to prayer.” He said, “Shall I direct you to something better than that?” I said, “What is it?” He said, “Say: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Come to prayer; come to prayer. Come to salvation; come to salvation. Allah is the Greatest; Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah.”’ 'Abdullah ibn Zayd went out until he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him what he had seen. He said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I saw a man wearing two green garments and carrying a bell,’ and related the account to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Your companion has seen a true vision. Go out with Bilal to the mosque, teach it to him, and let Bilal call it, for his voice is clearer than yours.’ I went out with Bilal to the mosque and began prompting him with it as he called it aloud. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab heard the voice and came out, saying, ‘Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I saw the same as he saw.’ Abu 'Ubayd said: Abu Bakr al-Hakami informed me that 'Abdullah ibn Zayd al-Ansari said these verses about it: ‘I praise Allah, Possessor of majesty and honor, with abundant praise for the call to prayer, when the bringer of good news from Allah came to me—how noble a bringer of good news he was to me—over three successive nights; each time he came, he increased my esteem.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source includes the complete call to prayer, the instruction to teach it to Bilal, 'Umar's corroborating vision, and a poem attributed through Abu Bakr al-Hakami to 'Abdullah ibn Zayd. ‘Clearer’ renders أندى صوتًا as a voice with greater resonance/carry.
فَأَكْرِمْ بِهِ لَدَىَّ بَشِيرًا فِي لَيَالٍ وَالَى بِهِنَّ ثَلاَثٍ
The poem's syntax around the bringer of good news and the three nights is compact and could admit a more precise poetic rendering.
Can a specialist refine the syntax and referent of the poem's final lines?
