حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ رَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ بِلاَلٍ، أَنَّهُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يُؤْذِنُهُ بِصَلاَةِ الْفَجْرِ فَقِيلَ هُوَ نَائِمٌ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ الصَّلاَةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ الصَّلاَةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ فَأُقِرَّتْ فِي تَأْذِينِ الْفَجْرِ فَثَبَتَ الأَمْرُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ‏.‏

'Amr ibn Rafi' narrated to us: 'Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, from Bilal, that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to notify him of the Fajr prayer. He was told, ‘He is asleep.’ Bilal said: ‘Prayer is better than sleep; prayer is better than sleep.’ This was then approved for the Fajr call, and the practice remained thus.
