حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ خِشْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ شَكَوْنَا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ حَرَّ الرَّمْضَاءِ فَلَمْ يُشْكِنَا .

Abu Kurayb reported to us; Muawiyah ibn Hisham reported to us, from Sufyan, from Zayd ibn Jubayr, from Khishf ibn Malik, from his father, from Abdullah ibn Masud, who said: ‘We complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the heat of the scorching ground, but he did not grant us relief.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The verb يُشْكِنَا is rendered conservatively as not granting relief; it may indicate not providing respite from the heat.
فَلَمْ يُشْكِنَا
The concise verb may mean he did not grant them respite or relieve them from the heat.
Is ‘grant us respite’ preferable to ‘grant us relief’ here?
