Hisham ibn Ammar al-Dimashqi narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Isa ibn Sumay narrated to us: Ibrahim ibn Sulayman al-Aftas narrated to us, from al-Walid ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Jurashi, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from Abu al-Darda, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us while we were speaking of poverty and fearing it. He said: Is it poverty you fear? By the One in whose hand is my soul, this world will surely be poured over you abundantly, until it causes no heart among you to turn aside except through it. By Allah, I have left you upon something like the clear, radiant path, whose night and day are the same. Abu al-Darda said: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah spoke truly. By Allah, he left us upon something like the clear, radiant path, whose night and day are the same.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic gives an emphatic oath that worldly abundance will be poured upon the listeners and warns of its power to turn hearts aside. The phrase about hearts is expressed compactly in the source and has been retained closely. Abu al-Darda then affirms the Prophets statement, a concluding report not present in the English witness. The image of al-bayda is a clear, bright path on which night and day are alike.
