Sunan Ibn Majah 78

'Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Waki' narrated to us. (H) 'Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Abu Mu'awiyah and Waki' narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Sa'd ibn 'Ubaydah, from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, from 'Ali, who said: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he had a stick in his hand with which he was scratching the ground. Then he raised his head and said: There is none among you whose place in Paradise and place in the Fire has not been written. It was asked: Messenger of Allah, should we then not rely upon that? He said: No. Act, and do not rely upon it, for each person is facilitated toward that for which he was created. Then he recited: As for one who gives, is mindful, and affirms the best, We shall make the path of ease easy for him. But as for one who is miserly, considers himself self-sufficient, and denies the best, We shall make the path of hardship easy for him.
