'Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Abu al-Husayn narrated to us; Hammad ibn Salamah informed me, from 'Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud'an, from 'Adi ibn Thabit, from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, who said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the pilgrimage he performed. He stopped along the road and ordered that the prayer be called collectively. He took 'Ali by the hand and said: Do I not have a greater claim over the believers than they have over themselves? They said: Indeed. He said: Do I not have a greater claim over every believer than he has over himself? They said: Indeed. He said: This is the ally of whoever has me as his guardian. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and oppose whoever opposes him.

  • The Arabic pairs wali and mawla, terms that can mean guardian, patron, or ally; the English witness expands them as “friend” and “master.” The translation keeps the relationship terms parallel.
