'Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Waki' narrated to us; Ibn Abi Layla narrated to us; al-Hakam narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said: Abu Layla used to spend the evenings talking with 'Ali. He would wear summer clothes in winter and winter clothes in summer. We said: Why do you not ask him? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me on the day of Khaybar while my eye was sore. I said: Messenger of Allah, my eye is sore. He spat in my eye, then said: O Allah, remove heat and cold from him. After that day I felt neither heat nor cold. He also said: I will send a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love, who does not flee. The people eagerly craned their necks for this, and he sent for 'Ali and gave it to him.

  • The Arabic says Abu Layla spent evenings talking with Ali; the witness mistranslates this as traveling with him. The Arabic does not name what was handed to Ali; the witness identifies it parenthetically as the banner.
