Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us; Shu'bah narrated to us, from Sa'd ibn Ibrahim, from 'Abdullah ibn Shaddad, from 'Ali, who said: I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) join his two parents in a saying to anyone except Sa'd ibn Malik, when he said to him on the day of Uhud: Shoot, Sa'd! May my father and mother be your ransom!

The Arabic phrase jamma a-abawayhi means that the Prophet invoked both parents in the expression; this is rendered as the familiar ransom formula.
