Nasr ibn Ali al-Jahdami narrated to us: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us in his house. I asked him about Salim, Abu al-Nadr. Then, in the course of the report, he said: Or Zayd ibn Aslam, from Ubaydullah ibn Abi Rafi, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Let me not find any of you reclining on his couch, when a matter concerning something I have commanded or forbidden comes to him, saying: I do not know; whatever we find in the Book of Allah, we follow.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source gives a transmission uncertainty: after mentioning Salim, Abu al-Nadr, the wording continues or Zayd ibn Aslam, then Ubaydullah ibn Abi Rafi, from his father. This variant is preserved rather than resolved. The Prophetic statement addresses selective reliance on the Quran while disregarding commands and prohibitions conveyed by the Prophet.
