Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Muadh ibn Muadh narrated to us, from Ibn Awn: Muslim al-Batin narrated to us, from Ibrahim al-Taymi, from his father, from Amr ibn Maymun, who said: I never missed Ibn Masud on a Thursday evening without going to him then. I never heard him say of anything, The Messenger of Allah said, until one evening when he said: The Messenger of Allah said... He lowered his head. I looked at him, and he was standing with his shirt buttons undone; his eyes brimmed with tears and his jugular veins swelled. He said: Or less than that, or more than that, or close to that, or something like that.

The Arabic preserves Ibn Masuds striking emotional reaction before narrating the Prophetic report. The final phrase gives alternatives or approximations about what preceded; the witness similarly records several possibilities.
