Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah informed us: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah reported to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was at Ji‘ranah, distributing gold and spoils while they were in Bilal’s lap. A man said, ‘Be just, Muhammad, for you have not been just.’ He replied, ‘Woe to you! Who would be just after me if I am not just?’ Umar said, ‘Messenger of Allah, let me strike the neck of this hypocrite.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘This man has companions—or a small band of companions—who recite the Quran, but it does not pass beyond their collarbones. They pass out of the religion as an arrow passes through its prey.’

  • The Arabic preserves two forms for ‘companions’: ashab or usayhab (a diminutive, ‘small band of companions’).
