Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘When one of you performs ablution and does it well, then comes to the mosque with no motive driving him except the prayer, seeking nothing but the prayer, Allah raises him one degree and removes one sin for every step he takes until he enters the mosque. Once he enters the mosque, he is in prayer for as long as the prayer is what keeps him there.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source repeats the restriction that the person's motive is only the prayer; both clauses are retained.
