Ahmad ibn Sa'id al-Darimi narrated to us: Al-Nadr ibn Shumayl narrated to us: Hammad narrated to us, from Thabit, from Abu Ayyub, from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, who said: We prayed Maghrib with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Some left, and some stayed after the prayer. The Messenger of Allah came back hurriedly, breathing hard, with his knees exposed, and said: ‘Rejoice! Your Lord has opened one of the gates of heaven, boasting of you before the angels: “Look at My servants: they have completed one obligation and are waiting for another.”’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The report distinguishes those who departed after Maghrib from those who stayed awaiting the next prayer. The phrase ‘your Lord’ and the quoted divine speech are retained as in the source.

  • قَدْ حَفَزَهُ النَّفَسُ

The phrase describes his breath as pressed/strained; the precise physical nuance is compact.

Can the physical description be rendered more precisely from the classical usage?
