Yahya ibn Hakim narrated to us: Ibn Abi 'Adi narrated to us, from Ibn 'Awn, from Anas ibn Sirin, from 'Abd al-Hamid ibn al-Mundhir ibn al-Jarud, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: One of my paternal uncles prepared food for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, ‘I would like you to eat in my house and pray there.’ He went to him. In the house there was a fahal, one of those mats. He ordered a section of it to be swept and sprinkled with water, then he prayed, and we prayed with him. Abu 'Abdullah ibn Majah said: ‘Fahal is a mat that has turned black.’

Ibn Majah's compiler gloss identifies fahal as a mat that has darkened; the gloss is translated as part of the source text.
فَحْلٌ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْفُحُولِ
The noun is uncommon; Ibn Majah's own gloss identifies it as a blackened mat.
Should the object be rendered simply as an old/darkened mat, following the compiler's gloss?
