حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " مَنْ تَرَكَ مَالاً فَلِوَرَثَتِهِ وَمَنْ تَرَكَ دَيْنًا أَوْ ضَيَاعًا فَعَلَىَّ وَإِلَىَّ وَأَنَا أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ " .

Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us: Waki narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Jafar ibn Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever leaves property, it belongs to his heirs. Whoever leaves a debt or dependents without support, the responsibility is mine and they come under my care; I have the stronger claim over the believers.”
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic pairs debt with ضياع, dependents left without care or provision. The phrase فعلي وإلي assigns responsibility and recourse to the Prophet; the English witness omits this nuance and compresses the wording.
