Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us: My father narrated to us: al-Amash narrated to us, from Nufay, Abu Dawud, from Buraydah al-Aslami, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Whoever gives a debtor in difficulty respite will have a charity recorded for each day. Whoever continues to give him respite after the debt falls due will have a charity like it for each day.”

The Arabic distinguishes respite before and after the debt becomes due. It says the latter reward is مثلُه (“like it”); the English witness explains this as equivalent to the loan amount, an interpretation not explicit in the Arabic wording.
