Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Shababah narrated to us. Muhammad ibn Bashshar also narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Jafar narrated to us. Both said: Shubah narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, who said: I heard Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman relating from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The best of you—or among the best of you—are those best in repaying what they owe.”

The source gives two opening routes converging at Shubah and preserves uncertainty between “the best of you” and “among the best of you”; both are retained.
