Muhammad ibn Khalaf al-Asqalani narrated to us: Yala narrated to us: Sulayman ibn Yusayr narrated to us, from Qays ibn Rumi, who said: Sulayman ibn Udhunan used to lend Alqamah one thousand dirhams until his stipend arrived. When it came, he demanded repayment and pressed him hard. Alqamah repaid him, apparently angered by this. Several months later Alqamah came to him and said, “Lend me one thousand dirhams until my stipend arrives.” Sulayman replied, “Yes, gladly. Umm Utbah, bring me that sealed pouch you have.” She brought it, and he said, “By Allah, these are the very dirhams you repaid to me; I have not moved a single one.” Alqamah said, “May your father be blessed! What made you do this to me?” Sulayman said, “What I heard from you.” Alqamah asked, “What did you hear from me?” He replied that he had heard Alqamah relate from Ibn Masud that the Prophet ﷺ said: No Muslim lends another Muslim a loan twice but that it is like giving charity once. Alqamah said, “That is what Ibn Masud informed me.”

The entire anecdote and embedded report are included. The sealed pouch and statement that no dirham had been moved explain that the original repayment was preserved for relending. The embedded hadith contrasts two loans with one charity; the Arabic says “a loan” without specifying a monetary amount there.
