Ubaydullah ibn Abd al-Karim narrated to us: Hisham ibn Khalid narrated to us: Khalid ibn Yazid ibn Abi Malik narrated to us. Abu Hatim also narrated to us: Hisham ibn Khalid narrated to us: Khalid ibn Yazid ibn Abi Malik narrated to us, from his father, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that on the night he was taken on the Night Journey, he saw written at the gate of Paradise that charity is rewarded tenfold and a loan eighteenfold. He asked Gabriel why a loan was better than charity. Gabriel replied that a beggar asks while he has something, whereas a borrower asks only out of need.

  • The Arabic gives two opening transmission routes, both preserved. The phrase وعنده literally says “while he has [something]”; the English witness likewise leaves the possessed item unstated.
