Hisham ibn Ammar narrated to us: Ismail ibn Ayyash narrated to me: Utbah ibn Humayd al-Dabbi narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Abi Ishaq al-Hunai, who said: I asked Anas ibn Malik, “If a man among us lends money to his brother and the borrower gives him a gift, what then?” Anas said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When one of you gives a loan and the borrower then gives him a gift or offers him a ride on an animal, he should neither ride it nor accept the gift unless that kind of exchange existed between them before.”

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic includes Yahya question to Anas and Anas attribution to the Prophet. The exception is a prior established practice between lender and borrower.
