Nasr ibn Ali al-Jahdami narrated to us: Mutamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Ibn Awn, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, who said: Umar ibn al-Khattab acquired land at Khaybar and went to the Prophet ﷺ for his advice. He said, “Messenger of Allah, I have acquired property at Khaybar, and I have never acquired anything more precious to me than it. What do you advise me to do with it?” He said, “If you wish, retain its principal and give its yield in charity.” Umar then dedicated it on the condition that its principal would not be sold, given away, or inherited. Its yield was to go to the poor, relatives, the emancipation of enslaved people, the cause of Allah, travelers, and guests. There was no blame on the person administering it to partake of it reasonably or to feed a friend, without treating it as his own wealth.

  • The complete chain and all terms of the endowment are included. The Arabic specifies keeping the principal intact and distributing its yield. غير متمول indicates that the administrator must not appropriate or accumulate the property as personal wealth.
