حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمُسْتَمِرِّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " عَلَى الْيَدِ مَا أَخَذَتْ حَتَّى تُؤَدِّيَهُ " .

Ibrahim ibn al-Mustamir narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Abdullah narrated to us. Yahya ibn Hakim also narrated to us: Ibn Abi Adi narrated to us. Both routes are from Said, from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, from Samurah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The hand is liable for what it has taken until it returns it.”
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic gives two routes that converge at Said; both are preserved. The concise legal wording علي اليد is rendered as liability resting on the person who took the property.
