Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Abu al-Ahwas narrated to us, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from al-Aswad, from Abu al-Sanabil, who said: Subayʿah al-Aslamiyyah bint al-Harith gave birth a little more than twenty nights after her husband died. When she had recovered from postpartum bleeding, she began to adorn herself for remarriage, and people criticized her for it. Her case was mentioned to the Prophet, and he said, ‘If she does that, her waiting period has ended.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The verb تَشَوَّفَتْ is rendered as ‘began to adorn herself for remarriage’; the surrounding context implies seeking marriage, though the verb itself is concise.

The verb تَشَوَّفَتْ may describe adorning or preparing herself and, in context, seeking marriage after her waiting period; the exact nuance is not explicit.

Would ‘began to adorn herself for remarriage’ best convey the verb here?
