حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ وَاللَّهِ لَمَنْ شَاءَ لاَعَنَّاهُ لأُنْزِلَتْ سُورَةُ النِّسَاءِ الْقُصْرَى بَعْدَ أَرْبَعَةِ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا .

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us: Abu Muʿawiyah narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Muslim, from Masruq, from ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud, who said: ‘By Allah, whoever wishes, we can invoke mutual imprecation. The short Surah of Women was revealed after four months and ten days.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The expression سُورَةُ النِّسَاءِ الْقُصْرَى is rendered literally as ‘the short Surah of Women’; the reference is not explained in this text.
قَالَ وَاللَّهِ لَمَنْ شَاءَ لاَعَنَّاهُ لأُنْزِلَتْ سُورَةُ النِّسَاءِ الْقُصْرَى بَعْدَ أَرْبَعَةِ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا .
The phrase سُورَةُ النِّسَاءِ الْقُصْرَى (‘the shorter/short Surah of Women’) appears to be a title or description, but the report does not identify it further.
Should this be left as ‘the short Surah of Women,’ or is a specific surah intended?
