حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ الْعَدَنِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ سَمِعَهُ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ " إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ " . قَالَ عُمَرُ فَمَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا ذَاكِرًا وَلاَ آثِرًا .

Muhammad ibn Abi ʿUmar al-ʿAdani narrated to us; Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Salim ibn ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar, from his father, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) heard him swear by his father. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, ‘Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers.’ ʿUmar said, ‘After that I never swore by them, whether deliberately or in reporting someone else’s oath.’

قَالَ عُمَرُ فَمَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا ذَاكِرًا وَلاَ آثِرًا .
ذاكرا ولا آثرا is literally ‘remembering nor transmitting’; it is understood as neither swearing by them intentionally nor repeating such an oath from someone else.
Does ‘whether deliberately or in reporting someone else’s oath’ convey the two senses without claiming more than the idiom supports?
