ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us: al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Murrah, from Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allāh, concerning the verse “Do not think of those who have been killed in the path of God as dead; rather, they are alive with their Lord, provided for.” He said: We asked about that, and the Prophet said: “Their souls are in green birds, roaming freely in Paradise wherever they wish, then taking shelter in lamps suspended from the Throne. While they are in that state, your Lord looks upon them and says: Ask Me for whatever you wish.” They say: “Our Lord, what should we ask You for, when we roam freely in Paradise wherever we wish?” When they realize they will not be left without asking, they say: “We ask You to return our souls to our bodies in the world, so that we may be killed in Your path.” When He sees they ask for nothing but that, they are left.”
