حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ الْعَامِلِيُّ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لأَكْثَمَ بْنِ الْجَوْنِ الْخُزَاعِيِّ " يَا أَكْثَمُ اغْزُ مَعَ غَيْرِ قَوْمِكَ يَحْسُنْ خُلُقُكَ وَتَكْرُمْ عَلَى رُفَقَائِكَ يَا أَكْثَمُ خَيْرُ الرُّفَقَاءِ أَرْبَعَةٌ وَخَيْرُ السَّرَايَا أَرْبَعُمِائَةٍ وَخَيْرُ الْجُيُوشِ أَرْبَعَةُ آلاَفٍ وَلَنْ يُغْلَبَ اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَلْفًا مِنْ قِلَّةٍ " .

Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad al-Ṣanʿānī narrated to us: Abū Salamah al-ʿĀmilī narrated to us, from Ibn Shihāb, from Anas ibn Mālik, that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Aktham ibn al-Jawn al-Khuzāʿī: “Aktham, campaign with people other than your own, and your character will improve and your companions will honor you. Aktham, the best number of companions is four, the best detachment is four hundred, and the best army is four thousand. An army of twelve thousand will not be defeated because of being few.”
