Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah, ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, and Aḥmad ibn Sinān narrated to us, all saying: Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “There are three whom God will neither speak to, nor look at, nor purify on the Day of Resurrection, and they will have a painful punishment: a man with surplus water in a wasteland who withholds it from a traveler; a man who makes a sale to another after the afternoon prayer, swears by God that he paid such-and-such for it, and the buyer believes him although he is lying; and a man who pledges allegiance to a leader only for worldly gain, fulfilling his pledge if he gives him some, but not fulfilling it if he does not.”
