Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Nabhan, the freedman of Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah, who reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If any of you has a mukatab who possesses enough to pay what he owes, let her veil herself from him.

  • Mukatab refers to a slave under a contract of manumission. The condition is that he has the means to make the payment due; the address is to the women, instructing her to veil herself from him.
