حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي قَزَعَةَ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ رَجُلاً، سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ مَا حَقُّ الْمَرْأَةِ عَلَى الزَّوْجِ قَالَ " أَنْ يُطْعِمَهَا إِذَا طَعِمَ وَأَنْ يَكْسُوَهَا إِذَا اكْتَسَى وَلاَ يَضْرِبِ الْوَجْهَ وَلاَ يُقَبِّحْ وَلاَ يَهْجُرْ إِلاَّ فِي الْبَيْتِ " .

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, from Shu‘bah, from Abu Qaza‘ah, from Hakim ibn Mu‘awiyah, from his father, that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), ‘What right does a wife have over her husband?’ He said: ‘He should feed her when he eats and clothe her when he dresses. He should not strike her face, call her ugly, or abandon her except within the home.’

The Arabic uses a verb from the root for ugliness; ‘call her ugly’ preserves that wording directly.
