Aishah said: My uncle through breastfeeding, Aflaḥ ibn Abi Qays, came and asked permission to enter after the veiling rules had been instituted. I refused to let him in until the Prophet (ﷺ) came to me and said, ‘He is your uncle, so let him enter.’ I said, ‘The woman breastfed me; the man did not.’ He replied, ‘May your hands be covered with dust—or your right hand.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The closing expression taribat yadaki is an idiom, retained literally; the source gives ‘your hands’ or ‘your right hand.’

  • ‏ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّمَا أَرْضَعَتْنِي الْمَرْأَةُ وَلَمْ يُرْضِعْنِي الرَّجُلُ قَالَ ‏"‏ تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكِ أَوْ يَمِينُكِ ‏"‏ ‏.

Taribat yadaki is an idiomatic expression whose force is not straightforwardly literal; the source also gives an alternative, ‘or your right hand.’

Should the idiom be rendered literally or with an English equivalent?
